Narwhals are known for their long tusks, which are actually teeth. The tusks are very sensitive and can grow up to 10 feet long. Male narwhals have longer tusks than females. Narwhal tusks are flexible and can bend up to one foot in all directions. They use their tusks to stun their prey instead of stabbing them. 75% of them are found in the Canadian Arctic. They change color as they age. Newborn narwhals are speckled blue-grey, teens are blue-black, adults are speckled grey and old narwhal are almost all white. They do not have a dorsal fin, the lack of the dorsal fin helps them prevent heat loss and allows them to swim under ice sheets. They are the deepest diving marine mammals and can dive as deep as 4,500 ft lasting around 25 minutes under water. They can spend more than three hours a day underwater below 800 m depths. The Inuit Peoples of Canada, Greenland, and Alaska have hunted narwhals for centuries and are legally allowed to do so. They use every part of the narwhal to survive in the Arctic.
