The beluga whale is easily recognizable thanks to its stark white coloring and globular head. They are closely related to the narwhal; they are the only two members of the Monodontidae family. They travel at an average speed of 2-6 mph and are capable of short bursts of speed up to 14 mph. Beluga whales’ dives may last up to 25 minutes and can reach depths of 800 meters. The beluga can change the shape of its bulbous forehead, called a “melon”, by blowing air around its sinuses. Threats to them include climate change, hunting, oil and gas development, and industrial and urban pollution. Polar bears and killer whales are known predators of belugas throughout their Arctic range. Between 1979 and 2018, the population declined by nearly 80%, from 1,300 whales to 279. The most recent abundance estimate of 331 animals suggests that the population may be stabilizing and possibly increasing, but continued surveillance in coming years will determine whether or not this is the case.
